Ancestral Detox
The enema has existed and still exists in many cultures around the world.
Here, within the Kalunga quilombo, it was widely used up until the generation that is now around 80 years old.
There are records of it in Ancient Egypt, Europe, India (it is even part of one of the procedures in Ayurveda), among Indigenous peoples across Latin America and Brazil, and it was also used in emergencies during World War II (that’s when the coffee enema emerged, due to the lack of morphine for analgesia). In places with no access to hospitals, it has also been used postpartum with the woman’s own blood in cases of hemorrhage.
There are also enemas made only with water for the removal of old feces and constipation.
Its tradition was lost over time due to the persecution of popular and natural medicines, and the rise of the pharmaceutical industry.
So yes, the enema has various uses, right?
But generally speaking, it works to cleanse the intestines through the rectal route, promoting balance for the body’s self-regulation, as well as emotional and mental equilibrium.
Enema of Master Dona Flor
(Videos of her can be found on YouTube: Oyá Coletivo YouTube Channel and also on Instagram: @mestradonaflor)
She was a quilombola elder from the village of Moinho, near where I live – Chapada dos Veadeiros, Goiás. She learned from her grandmother, a local Indigenous woman. Dona Flor passed away in August 2023, and we keep her legacy alive.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
- Increased physical, mental, and emotional vitality
- Reduced food cravings
- Emotional lightness
- Reduction of abdominal measurements
- Improved skin and hair
- Elimination of fluid retention (deflation)
- Strengthened immune system
- Better absorption of nutrients
- Feeling satisfied with less food
- Disappearance or reduction of fibroids/cysts, endometriosis/adenomyosis, and other gynecological symptoms
- Regular bowel movements
- Parasite cleansing
- Reduction or elimination of liver fat and other liver-related issues
- Elimination of chronic fatigue (in the medium and long term)
- Preparation for medical procedures
- Support for recovery from invasive treatments
- Decreased cravings for sweets and dairy
- Can be used alongside psychiatrists who support natural therapies for tapering medications
Note: The benefits vary from person to person depending on health status and number of applications.
WHAT ARE THE CONTRAINDICATIONS?
- Pregnant people under 6 months of gestation
- Those with abdominal surgery within the past year
- Severe cases of intestinal diseases (in these cases, a doctor’s guidance is required to determine the best timing for the enema)
It is recommended for all genders and ages (with adjustments in the amount of tea and plants used).
THE INTESTINE
The intestine is considered by many researchers to be the body’s second brain. It contains half a billion neurons and about 30 neurotransmitters. Along with the microbiota, it is responsible for hormone production and transforming food into energy.
In simple terms, this means our gut determines far more about our health than we realize (see the book “10% Human” by Alanna Collen).
Insomnia, depression, stress, cancer, food addiction, overweight, cysts and fibroids, endometriosis, anemia, infertility, allergies, constipation, and many other symptoms may be related to gut health. Can you believe it?
The neurons in your belly can influence your behavior, emotions, and even personality without you realizing it.
This happens because the intestines are full of folds and curves that cause food residue and old feces to get stuck, releasing toxins and killing beneficial bacteria.
As if the intestine’s winding shape weren’t enough, we also consume excessive amounts of meat, dairy, gluten, processed and industrialized foods — all contributing to the degeneration of gut health. Add to this a fast-paced lifestyle that compromises mealtime and chewing quality.
The gut-brain axis is a two-way street: just as an unhealthy gut can damage mental health, unprocessed emotional issues also manifest in the gut. This can be seen in the color of the enema tea expelled, which varies depending on the individual’s mental state.
Thankfully, we have this powerful tool — the enema! What better opportunity to give your body a chance to reset, self-regulate, and heal emotionally and physically?
To process emotional patterns that remain stuck in the mind, just as feces are trapped in the intestines, causing illness in the body.
Many people compare the experience to a rebirth or a life reset.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The procedure involves inserting liquids (in this case, herbal tea from the Dona Flor Method) via the rectum using an enema kit and a thin rectal tube.
Once the tea is inserted, an abdominal massage is performed, and the person moves into positions to help the tea travel up the large intestine, dislodging old feces, parasites, and waste.
With each application, the body absorbs the herbal tea’s properties, which may help eliminate gallstones or liver fat, for example.
After administering 1 liter of tea (lasting about 3–5 minutes), the person retains it for a period that varies individually, then uses the bathroom.
From the expelled feces, we can make a brief diagnosis of intestinal and overall health and offer complementary care (such as oral remedies).
A minimum of 5 applications is recommended, or until the intestine shows signs of cleanliness (maximum of 10).
Two applications are made per day, with at least 4 hours and no more than 18 hours between them.
APPLICATIONS CAN BE CARRIED OUT BY ME IN PERSON OR SELF-ADMINISTERED REMOTELY.

Training
The Ashiyana Training School has been running trainings since 2010. With hundreds of graduates from all across the world, we are globally recognised for our unique approach to Yoga and Wellbeing.
Our trainings are so much more than just a training, and many view them as self-development courses that equip you with essential life skills at a time when self-responsibility is dwindling, and there is a corresponding explosion in chronic, lifestyle diseases.
We strongly believe that the world needs many more Yoga teachers, as well as more wellbeing practitioners in general.
However, we also recognise that precisely what these practitioners offer needs to evolve with our fast-changing times. We invite you therefore to consider how you might create a differentiated offer from what is already available, as well as a more holistic offer that better addresses the lifestyle guidance that your clients are so much in need of.

Ashiyana Coach Training (online) - ‘The Yoga teacher of the future’
Chris, Tobie, Charlotte and other members of our wellbeing team
We are very excited to offer this training which has been seven years in the making. Chris, Tobie, Charlotte and others in the team have been discussing the need for a whole new approach to yoga teaching and coaching that meets the needs of today’s client. There are hundreds of thousands of yoga teachers, and multiple types of coach, but none of them are being trained to work in a way that embraces the whole of the human lifestyle. Yoga is the perfect system for today’s challenges, but it’s true expression has mostly been lost. Life is complex and stressful for so many of us these days, and there is a profound need for a support system which centres on holistic wellbeing experts who are both full of compassion and also supported by an on and offline ecosystem.
We have created a training that merges the ancient wisdom of yoga with modern therapeutic techniques and cutting edge science. We offer this as an on and offline course – 150hr online, plus a 50hr module at one of our centres. This offline module will take the form of a practicum which allows us to assess you face to face and give the feedback and guidance that will ensure the best possible version of YOU as a coach.
